Forums can be as easy or hard to run as you want them to be really, if you are proactive and posting and moderating it can be hard work, if you sit back and let it run it's course it is fairly easy.One I helped run used to have upgrades done on USA time so we had to get up middle of the night to make sure it all came back on line or we had 50 or so irate emails to get up to in the morning. Another needed a lot of moderation as we had a rather contentious membership that too was hard work trying to get everyone to feel safe to have their say.
Our dog rescue forum is hard work too as it has to be updated every few hours with new animals and checking for anyone offering homes.
