I use him when I am joking or I find something funny, jolly green man with the toothy grin seems to say it all.

I never use it either because I wouldn't be sure if I was laughing when I should be in sympathy, the little man looks like he's gritting his teeth as if he's in pain or something, badly designed to signify a laugh I think. EZ Rider has a point, that's how I look when I get a bad pint.

I think it is whatever has been said makes you sick. So instead of sticking your fingers down your throat as you would visually you put the green man on.
I would have also thought that the green man could be envy as isn't it
a saying that says he was green with envy???
