Courting.

I haven't heard this word for ages, do people still go courting these days, or is it all just dating.?

Also ive always thought its a word aimed at men, do women also do courting. I never felt i courted in my younger days, just went out with my girlfriends at the time.

I think the closest i got to courting was after i was married.

No they don't court any more I keep getting into trouble for saying my niece and her beau (get told off for that one too) are courting. Apparently even though they are engaged (affianced is not allowed either) they are still dating.

Yes..I understood ''courting'' to be the predecessor of an engagement meaning that you were no longer available..and an engagement always ended in marriage..

Re: Courting.

I still say courting too. I think the word 'courting' indirectly implies the intention of marriage at some future date and the young folks of today want to get in as much 'dating' as possible before the word marriage even enters their mind, if at all, courting has a sort of official ring to it, if you know what I mean, say I asked a relative how her little Betty was getting on now that she's all grown up and she replied "Oh she's doing great, she's courting a nice young chap from Cork" I would then get the impression that she was settled with this chap, 'going steady' if you like, but that's just my opinion.
