Dead Porcupine

LISBON, Maine (AP) — A Maine man in search of a valuable mineral cut open a dead porcupine on the side of the road and unexpectedly pulled out its baby.

Jared Buzzell, of Lisbon, says he was searching for wild mushrooms Thursday when he saw a porcupine get hit by a car in Minot. Buzzell says he'd heard that a valuable mineral deposit used in Chinese medicine formed in the stomachs of porcupines.

He then cut open the dead porcupine to search for the mineral and instead found the baby.

He tells WMTW-TV (bit.ly/1hlWRUl) he cut the umbilical cord and thought the baby porcupine was dead until he started massaging it and it began breathing.

Buzzell is caring for the baby at home and plans to give it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

A tale of compassion over greed. If the facts are right then it is quite a powerful message and gives hope: hope that our basic instincts are more powerful than those we have been indoctrinated with - or at least it is for some.

Well put Mark.
The man's original motive, to me, is not very different to seeing someone run over and just because they look dead, searching them to see if there's anything worth pinching.

Hadda rethink though - altered 'for most' to 'for some'. Oh well.

Erm ... nope.

Animals don't have pocketsess now do they. You ain't gonna find a wallet on a porcupine now are you.

Just seems to me that a guy that is obviously pretty brutal should have a change of heart when confronted with an innocent creature to the point that he brings it to life and then cares for it. He could have so easily just ended it.

Bit suspicious about this story mind as this guy seems to know far more than is usual about Porcupines for sure. Did he find it or did he ...

Re: Dead Porcupine

Our roads are littered with road kill but fortunately a fair number of people carry a thick black texta with them to check the animals pouch and mark a big X on them to show that they have been checked. If you find a joey you call WIRES and take it to their local rep or they will come and get it.

Personally I always try to avoid driving at dusk and dawn on country roads because hitting a big roo would just about destroy my car (it doesn't have a bull bar).

Re: Dead Porcupine

My friend who lives in the Highlands of Scotland had a big stag run into her car a few months back. He survived alright, but damaged her car nevertheless.
