Energy

I have the news on and I'm flabbergasted!.There's to be an investigation into the energy supply business and like a ball from a cannon comes the threat of blackouts, what do you do with people like that? the bloody gall of them, with profits at an all time high they say they wont be able to invest in new power stations, why didn't they think that before the investigation was announced?, makes me very angry.

Re: Energy

If I had my way no one would make profit from necessities like power, all "profits" should be reinvested back into the companies who provide us with it.

Humans need certain things to survive and it feels very wrong to me anyone makes money off that.

Re: Energy

Not sure how much of this you can believe but it seems the profit isn't huge. But if you muliply it by the amount of people on the books then the profit at the end of the year is enormous. Then again how much is it to build a power station? Talking really big money then.

Re: Energy

To believe profits are low you have to believe the people who own the companies are not in it for what they can get and personally I cannot believe that for a moment.

Re: Energy

I wish we had an alternative to gas and electricity....some I know have log-burners but logs aren't cheap. I'm sure they made plenty of profit in the past but hey - ho they can always put the prices up......or not!
I remember the power cuts in the 70's, not good!

Apparently the government says they won't let power cuts happen. If they did however, we can be sure they will select the most damaging time e.g. Christmas day or similar.
Time will tell.

Re: Energy

A 'fat cat' (Toff) from the industry has threatened this, if all of them took a pay deduction, a substantial one - that would help.

Re: Energy

I've advocated on here many times before - we need to re-nationalise all the utility companies (without compensation!!!). That way we can be sure that any 'profits' from these companies are ploughed back into the industry instead of lining some greedy individual's pockets.

From what I understand we wouldn't need to compensate anyway as they run these businesses on a sort of licence so if at end of term we took back the business no one would be due any compensation.

It won't happen under tories or labour, one is too intent on capitalism the other too scared to do anything useful.
So I can't see it happening but I do agree with you it needs to be done.

Re: Energy

We need more transparency. How much have these power companies made over a certain time period? How much have they in the bank or salted away somewhere? How much do power stations cost and so on.
