Nervous!

Today we've got to go through areas that have been flooded recently and, looking at all the info I can find it's a bit of a worry.
My wife's mother is almost 90 and it's a family get-together to celebrate her forthcoming Birthday about 90 minutes away from us towards London.

The problem yesterday was that all the possible routes were showing some of recent floods but very little has been updated this morning on the EA site; that doesn't seem to be much good at all and it locked-up when I tried it 15 mins ago - not very encouraging!

I've looked on the Live Traffic & Travel News now and that's being updated - 9 mins ago at the moment - so as we've got to go soon that'll have to do!

Hope everyone's OK today - gotta go!! stevmk2

Re: Nervous!

Ditto and ditto!

My niece came down to East London from Stevenage the other evening for her dad's birthday and what would have been a 40 minute journey home took 1 hr 45 mins, as she was diverted several times due to flooded roads. She said it was a nightmare driving through unknown dark country lanes.

Hope you have a safe and easy journey, and many congratulations to the birthday gal! Have a great time.

Re: Nervous!

Take the advice of experts:

Never drive, ride walk or play in floodwater

The major cause of death during floods is by people entering floodwater. This includes driving, riding and walking through floodwater and children playing in floodwater.

The NSW SES advises people to NEVER enter floodwater.

Floodwater may be deeper and faster flowing than it appears and often contains hidden snags and debris.

A 'road closed' or a 'road flooded' sign means that road is unsafe to travel on. Find alternate ways which are free from floodwater or wait until the all clear is given for that road. It is safer to turn around than to enter floodwater.

If you come across a flooded road which has no 'road closed' or 'road flooded sign', it is still unsafe to travel through.

If it's Flooded, Forget it

Floodwater can also erode and wash away road surfaces leaving deep holes and uneven surfaces which cannot be seen.

Never drive through floodwater

In areas prone to flash flooding, leaving low-lying areas (homes and businesses) well before flash flooding begins (evacuation), is the best action to take, but only if it is safe to do so . If you are trapped by rising floodwater, seek refuge in the highest part of a sturdy building. Stay there and call 000 (triple zero) if you need rescuing. (or what ever your emergency number is 999?)

Playing in Floodwater

During and after flood events, we often see images in the media of children playing in floodwater - swimming, riding boogie boards, riding through and jumping into floodwater. This activity is highly dangerous and there have been deaths of children due to playing in floodwater.
