So what would you do (if you ruled the world etc)?

The baby P case makes us all angry/sad/despairing/incomprehending but, when you think about it with a clear head, rather than an angry head, can you actually come up with any suggestions to prevent something like this happening again. (After every prominent child cruelty case it seems that promises are made and practices changed, yet, in time, it happens again. Maybe it's just inevitable?)

I heard an interesting piece on the radio this morning where the speaker was saying that perpetrators of this sort of crime are at one end of a spectrum (sociopaths, totally self-centred, totally non-empathetic, sadistic etc) but the people who are charged with monitoring them and steering them away from trouble are at the exact opposite end (caring, empathetic, trusting, wanting to get the best etc). This made me wonder if Social Work should restrict itself to health-related matters, possibly cease to be a specialism and become a part of the para-health sector, leaving child care/child abuse issues solely to the Family sector of the Police Force (which already exists of course). Police are trained to be sceptical, to believe that people really can be that bad, not to have the wool pulled over their eyes.

What about you? - and remember new and exquisitely painful means of torture are not big and not clever and really don't become you.

Need to think about this DM.

One of the problems in the caring services IMO is that procedures get written in response to investigations of child deaths, the procedures are followed and monitored for a few years; staff change, financial support falls off, procedures are abandoned or replaced with different criteria and the same thing happens again.

If I were King:

1. Health care would be free to all & top notch

2. Nobody in any company could make more than three times the lowest paid employee

3. People convicted of a capital crime would not be locked up for life but instead be put up
against a wall and shot in the head with a single bullet. No baby sitting bad people.

4. There would be no abortion

5. Rape would be a capital crime - see law #3 above

6. Child abuse would be a capital crime

7. The United States would stop being the world's policeman and stay out of world politics

8. Illegal aliens in our country would receive nothing but a trip back to where they came from
instantly. Repeat offenders would be sent to a desert island.

9. Minimum driving age would be 21, Minimum drinking age would be 21

10. People who cut me off on the highway should have their liscense revoked

The chances of a child being abused, ill-treated or killed by anyone other than a member of his or her own family is minimal. So instead of yet another tier of snoopery (the Vetting and Barring System currently rolling out across Britain for volunteers / staff in contact with children) it would be better to re-institute the Health Visitors, local child welfare clinics and Home Nurses as in the past.

I think that's a very good answer Claire.
Yet another case of where our crazy media (particularly newspapers) skew the view of the Great British Public and cause problems.

Tell me as a matter on interest how do you reverse the "single bullet punishment in cases of those later proved to be the victims of a miscarriage of justice. No system is infallible and mistakes are inevitable.

You have in your hand a gun with a single bullet. In front of you is the person found guilty of a capital crime; it is your daughter now will you pull the trigger (if any father says yes he is either a psychopath or a liar). Now move forward a couple of years and it is found that your daughter was wrongly convicted. Do you want another gun and bullet or do you want to live with the memory of what you have done?

As regard no abortion what about rape victims just for one example.

"As regard no abortion what about rape victims just for one example. "

This is an age old argument for "right to kill folks." I'd sentence the baby to the same thing they now sentence the rapist, life. We could argue forever about topics like rape, capital punishment, incest & child abuse. Everyone has an opinion.

Even my pastor spoke for execution of murderers. This thread spoke strictly of my opinion on things. I grant you yours.

OK fair dues. I couldn't live with the risk of executing innocents wrongly convicted; you could. Each to our own.

I understand that this is for our opinions...
so I think a separate thread to discuss this would be good
