Benefits Street (James Turner Street)

Benefits Street, channel 4 last night, all the bad language and crime was usual stuff for a programme like this, but what stuck out was the fact that for better or worse, the residents actually communicated with each other, beyond the customary good morning and a comment about the weather etc, anyone else watch it.

Maybe, it depends if you think getting cross would change anything.

I watched it for large part of the time, but eventually had to switch it off as I couldn't take any more of the F***ing language, and the programme didn't seem to be getting anywhere.

I didn't see it but the comment about community doesn't surprise me, when you get several families not working they have time to be community and unite against the world. When people are working long hours they just simply don't have that "luxury".

When we had a period of unemployment we were active on the residents association, managed to help in the local voluntary shop and visited the older members of the community checking on them during the bad weather. All that stopped the minute we started working again as we just didn't have time to do it.

Re: Benefits Street (James Turner Street)

I half watched it and was incensed by the young couple who were moaning because they got into trouble for fiddling their benefits and had them cut, had been receiving £1,500 a month

The whole thing was depressing ...

they probably communicated, because they were sharing their various SCAMS in order to beat the system

Re: Benefits Street (James Turner Street)

Sadly though programmes like this give a very biased view of people on benefit, some are no doubt like this but many more are just desperate and really living on a pittance and unable to find work they can do.
