Is it just me?

An online friend has recently got divorced, and there are loads of messages of congratulations on his divorce. This sits a bit uncomfortably with me. Whilst I can see that the event may be a relief in many instances, is the confirmed failure of a marriage really something one should be congratulated on?

No it isn't, thats todays society for you - you can even buy cards on divorce in the form of 'congratulations'.
Its a pathetic reflection of our society, and I hope whoever receives the cards, has no children who can view them .....

That's terrible, even if a person feels relief surely they have had some happiness during the marriage and it's a thing of sadness to accept you no longer love someone ?

I agree with everyone above has said. Divorce is absolutely nothing to celebrate.

Re: Is it just me?

I suppose it's according to the circumstances of the divorce.
A friends niece had a terrible time divorcing her husband..he turned out to be quite wicked during their marriage and to their son too, so yes, a card would probably have been welcome.
I don't see divorce as failure, if you can't make a marriage work, for whatever reason, you've not failed..it's not like taking an exam.
Give and take comes to mind, you can't keep giving, makes it all one sided and there are some selfish people out there.

Re: Is it just me?

Thing is though people seem to be giving up so easily these days marriage isn't all easy going and laughs even the best marriages can bring challenges and it's how we face them that makes for a really good marriage. Which is why the word failure is used IMO.

Of course some people have no choice and some things are deal breakers but really looking at the numbers I can't believe they have all tried as hard as they could to stay married and make it work.

Whatever the circumstances leading up to the divorce I still don't think it is something to celebrate and, least of all, to send congratulation cards for.

Re: Is it just me?

If two people marry, presumably at some point they must have had a good relationship.

I can't see that the breakdown of any relationship is ever something to be celebrated. Relief that a bad period in a persons life has come to an end maybe, celebration no..
