Welsh Miners

100 years ago yesterday - a major tragic accident occurred in the Welsh mining community which killed more than 100 miners and devastated an entire community.

For those that died and their relatives:

Re: Welsh Miners

The working conditions in the mines then were horrendous, and the people who toiled long and hard in such filthy and dangerous conditions have my every respect, we couldn't comprehend it nowadays.

RIP

Re: Welsh Miners

Not just in the mines either working conditions most of us would refuse to work in now. People lost lives in all sorts of areas, farming accidents happened every week people maimed and then lost their homes and ended up on the streets or the workhouse or dead.

Re: Welsh Miners

When we look at the lovely green mountains and valleys of Wales it is easy to forget the horror which once took place beneath them.

Yesterday the Welsh National Mining Memorial was unveiled in Senghenydd, a fitting tribute to the brave men who lost their lives there and in other 150 mining disaster in Wales.

Re: Welsh Miners

A lovely tribute Geoff.
My mother, grandmother and aunties, were evacuated to a mining town in the last war. Hardworking, hospitable, generous and fun people, as you'd ever wish to meet...
We used to visit for many years, until all the men slowly passed away with diseases associated with mining
One of my 'uncles' was called Bronc - I never realised why as a child.

Think Maggie Thatcher should be thanked for shutting these hell holes.

Watching the reports of Aberfan was the first and last time I saw journalists cry on TV

Re: Welsh Miners

That was dreadful. I remember watching it unfold on TV, I have a lot of respect for all miners.
