Not living in the real world?

On Friday I had a long awaited appointment with the Podiatrist (doctor requested it back in March/April), at the end of which she gave me two little booklet/catalogue things with the suggestion that I might be interested in looking at the various shoes, wide fitting, adjustable widths, Velcro fastening, special cushioned insoles yada yada. Well earlier this evening I had a gander. Blimey O'Riley! The prices were unbelievable. They started at £40. And went up to £80-£90, and she was handing these catalogues out to flippin pensioners!

Not all pensioners are poor, some are quite fluent, although they don't display the fact.

Yep many seem to expect everyone to be able to afford what they can, as we are on low wages despite working long hours when the GP suggested best way to get my husbands knee operation was to go private we looked into it and came back with figures of £11,000 for what he needs done, almost a years wages for him !

Re: Not living in the real world?

Daisymay, it's not easy to get a decent pair of shoes at a price you can afford these days and £40-£90 is not unusual.

When I was working, I used to like wearing 'Loake' shoes. Now a nice pair of Grenson or Loake brogues will cost £200 +. OK for visiting clients, but not for casual wear.

I must admit that I miss having the private medical care that came with my job. When I had a minor hernia op, I had to wait ages for the NHS, and then was told that the consultant would have done it privately. Things like physio, I would generally go privately - no waiting around.

I don't think I have ever paid more £30 for a pair of shoes and that was only once when I had a heel problem and needed a specialised pair. You can get decent shoes for under £20 on ebay and wide ones too.

Re: Not living in the real world?

You know what they say - "A good bed and a good pair of shoes.. If you're not in one, you're in the other".

I can sometimes get everyday shoes in "The Original Factory Shop" for around £30, but I wouldn't buy a pair from eBay, Amazon etc without being able to try them on first.

The last good pair of casual shoes I got were 'Ecco' that I bought from an outlet shop in Denmark for about £55. Lasted for years.

£40 for a pair of special shoes is cheap now, have you seen the price of some of the trainers the kids are wearing?
