Mollie, the fringe is part of the Edinburgh Tattoo and festivities and goes on for about three weeks. The fringe is for performers that are starting out and they do it for nothing basicaly, they perform on the streets. The better ones will hire a venue and will charge you to see them and the price will vary depending on how good they are rated. It very colourful and can be very entertaining.

Thanks for the explanation, chuck. I think it's wonderful and would love to have seen that first hand.
