What Drives You Potty?

Text speak for a start on a forum. Are people genuinely too lazy to spell out mate instead of m8, or 2 instead of to, too, two? It's only for the sake of a couple of digits.

To a point, I can understand folk using that on a mobile phone to save space, but to me using text speak on a forum is just lazy. I could understand it also if the forum was for teenagers or kids, but not over 50s.

I've been reading on here tonight and have come across both examples I have given.

My bug bear is the indiscriminate use of:

They're; There; Their

They are NOT interchangeable.

BTW this is not particularly about this forum but the internet and even newspapers in general.

There's a lot of bad spelling on here but it's not that important so long as others can understand the message.

No problem with incorrect spelling .... text jargon - no, not on a forum ....

Re: What Drives You Potty?

I don't have too much of a problem with text speak if I can understand it and if people don't mind explaining if I don't. Some people use text so much it pretty much becomes their way of communicating, I also know one person who uses it because she finds it much easier with her dyslexia to do so, and any thing that helps her contribute to forums is fine by me, her messages are extremely interesting and thought provoking which is for me the key.

Again spelling I live with a terminally bad speller, he is far from lazy it's his dyslexia that causes the problem, I have a similar problem with numbers and I assure you I do try my best to get them right but they just don't come out right at all.

Re: What Drives You Potty?

If a person has a problem with spelling, I think they should make it known to the forum, otherwise people will get the wrong impression as to why they are using 'text speak' - I think thats fair enough .....
Cant see it being a problem on here tho' - or have I missed it .....
