Old people: A burden?

LOts of discussion about "OLD PEOPLE" on tv & press.
I don't think I'm a burden on my family OR the state, but plenty of over 65s do,

I think I'm an asset to my family & my neighbourhood & as Janice on JUKE BOX JURY said all those years ago
"OI'll give foive"

What are you on a scale of 1 to 5

1 being a burden & 5 an asset

I would be a 5. I can't be a burden to my family - I don't have one.

At the moment i'll give myself a 5, we tend to be the bank of mum and dad now and then when the younger generation are struggling.
Also we haven't quite finished looking after the older generation.

A 10 for sure! but then there are two of us and we are always available for baby sitting even though it means a 30 mile drive each time. We wouldn't have it any other way of course.

Hopefully we're still at no. 5. The only thing is I now pay people to do jobs I would once have done myself. That must be a good thing as I'm circulating my money among other people.

Re: Old people: A burden?

I don't like this idea of anyone being a burden, even when people are ill or dying they are still wanted and needed by their families, no one wants to see them dead, so how is that being a burden ?

Sure sometimes people need caring for but that helps others grow and become better people and they are therefore not a burden at all.

I think we are both a 5. We have a generation of grandchildren to support (particularly my daughter's children). Can't slip off this mortal coil yet or become dependent on anyone else - too much work and responsibility (financial and emotional) for our foreseeable futures.

Re: Old people: A burden?

I'm about a four at the moment, but expect to become a two or one in about 5-10 years! Being disabled I will be a burden to my children when I get to the stage where I need care. I have told all of them to put me in a home when that day comes and they're not to feel guilty about it, as long as I have a pencil & paper to draw with I will be happy. I will not expect them to give up their lives for me.
