Twitter and tweeting

I'm posting in technology but if the mods think it's more appropriate in Discussions, feel free to move it!

I've never been keen on social networking sites, but can see why such as facebook might appeal to people with a lot of scattered friends. But what is the point of Twitter???

As I understand it you can only post very short messages, so it's not as if you can even have a decent conversation, let alone a discussion. And why do we need a public and international platform to "tweet" about eg what you are having for tea?

Can those on here who tweet please explain?
