Bamboo Shoots

I love my bamboo shoots... they are growing nicely, has anyone else got these, do they need to be cut in the future...

Re: Bamboo Shoots

They're green - I bought two in a vase of water, they grow up and outwards - little branches ...

Re: Bamboo Shoots

Pats I am afraid bamboo is a dirty word in this house since my neighbour planted some on the other side of the fence and the dam things started coming up everywhere including in the raised bed where I plant my runner beans

Re: Bamboo Shoots

He's planted the wrong bamboo. Some are clump forming others throw out runners. Sounds like he's planted one of the latter.

Pats you shouldn't have to cut them, they don't grow like the ones in the garden

Re: Bamboo Shoots

My cat ate the bamboo shoots I brought home once. Fortunately it's not toxic to cats, but it was a bit expensive as snacks go!
It was a "lucky bamboo" arrangement similar to this:

Unless it is a clumping bamboo don't plant it out. The stuff gets everywhere it spreads through its roots at a phenomenal rate. When I bought this house the previous owner had some growing along the side of the house, it took me years (and quantities of Glyphosate) to get rid of it completely. In my climate it grows while you watch!
