I adopted this song in 1962 ,when I was just fourteen and a spindly bean pole of a lad I was just a member of rent a crowd. Its no fun being a fourteen year old, spotty gangly and invisible . I was always the last person to be picked for teams of rounders. I could go on.

Then , bless her heart along came Susan Maugham and my star appeared in the sky. Girls discovered me, I was Bobby.


Each night I sit at home,

I found myself recently looking again at the words, and after the passing of over 50 years I am troubled by the lyrics.
How could I have not noticed how cavalier and roundly chauvinistic they are.

I hear she is still blasting Bobby's Girl on cruise ships. As they play musical chairs around the Med.

I liked that song too Robert, I think when we are young like that we all hope a song bearing our name pops up to help level the playing field. I thought my big break came with Burl Ives and 'Jimmy Crack Corn', not a great leap forward I admit, terrible lyrics, I think it scared off the Girls in case they got bitten by the 'Blue tail fly'.

My nickname "Jim" is, but not my... REAL NAME. That shall always remain secret. One person did discover it once, but the least said about that the better. My wife still has the nightmares, me dragging him into the cellar and the painful screams, then of course the... No, I'll stop there.

My dad had 6 siblings.

JOseph was called TEd,
Amelia was called Sylve
dad (Willam) was called Bill or Pop
John was called Bob
Janet was known as Jinny
Margeurite was Rita
Mabel was called, erm Mabel.

No wonder I grew up confused.
