Of course, but not so much now as the abroad ones are usually pre-printed by the machine in the post office so aren't proper stamps any more. sadly.

The card cost far less that so it went in with my regular two- or three-month letter to my cousin which costs the same.

I understand my letters take 10-14 days to reach Tasmania. My cousin will not use e-mail but tried this a while back and struggled with an iPad, especially the keyboard.
That does seem a bit excessive because I just posted all my cards to the UK and they were $2.20 (it might have been $2.40 but I think it was $2.20). I don't get a pensioner concession for that however there is a special Christmas rate - ie a sight reduction on the normal rate but it is slight.

I too was a Postman in the UK (London SW1) in about 1975 and I can assure you I never put a line through any unfranked stamp.

Also in those days if you put a stamp in the upper left or lower right corner of the envelope the franking machine on the facing table couldn't reach it. They were supposed to be hand stamped but there was far too much mail to bother with that the envelope was alway faced with the address readable for sorting, bugger where the stamp was.

What happens nowadays with automatic sorting I can't say, perhaps the machines are much cleverer.

I don't think I have ever checked to see if a stamp is franked so its unlikely I would notice but if I did I would probably think I could use it again and put it to one side....then lose it

Of course I'd unstick it, provided it came off easily. I wouldn't bother to steam it off though!

If you left the stamp off, would the post office have to pay to get it?
