One of my dad's favorite (in a humorous sort of way) songs was "Thank God for Unanswered Prayers," about a man who returns to his high school reunion, only to discover that the the one who got away didn't turn out like the girl imagined in his mind.

In the end, we each make our own bed and put whomever is in it - in it .

Indeed. I have one example exactly like that.
A young lady I used to fancy when I was much younger who appears in her Facebook pictures now to be quite a dog!
