I always put the odd coins in charity boxes. When the silver mounts up, I use that in Tesco.

Yes I too use the Coinstar machine for my coppers. Though recently I started bagging it in bank bags and paying in OTC to an account. Mind, I made sure I also had the requisite amount of 5p coins too, to make it worthwhile. I know one of the banks has a coin machine allowing you to then credit it to your account.

Re: Never Take a Copper Home!

I was amazed when I visited the UK that you still have copper coins. Our smallest value coin is a 5c (ex 6d) and my kids and their generation just throw them away as being useless (I put them in a money box).

They did away with the 1c & 2c in 1992 - what is that? over 25 years ago -when they became more expensive to make than their value. No one misses them.

When you fill up with petrol just make sure you end up with a value ending in 2 or 7 because they are rounded down

I vaguely remember that the UK's 1p and 2p coins were very handy for weighing recreational drugs they must have had a specific weight

Re: Never Take a Copper Home!

We don't have coppers here anymore. I guess it has been at least 5 years since they got away with them, and I am so glad.
If something adds up on the cash registers, they go to the nearest nickle. Pretty soon all cash registers will be converted, I guess....or maybe not, as other countries like yourself still have them........
