Rain, wind, hail or shine. In the snow with wellie boots and two pairs of socks. Our little toes still ached with the cold. Ouch ! I can feel it now, poor little mites we were.
I remember it well PD
I had horrendous childblains on both my toes and fingers.
Seemed to spend hours at freezing bus stops too.
I wonder if today's children would know what a chilblain is thank goodness.
I often think if this is why I have spent so much of my life in tropical countries .

And some people say they were the best days of their lives!! What planet are they living on? I hated schools in the UK but the couple i went to in good old Canada were brilliant.

Re: How Far Did You Walk To School As A Child?

We lived in a farm cottage 2 miles from the primary school via country lanes, no pavements. It was also 2 miles from the nearest bus stop and a further half mile off the bus the other end to the secondary school. We were fit in those days. During my fourth and fifth years I had to attend evening classes three nights a week for my exam courses. That meant I walked10 miles on each of those 3 days. Used to get through a pair of shoes every two or three weeks.

It wasn't the walk, it was having to negotiate with the various factions on the way that was a pain.

We had no car, and could not afford school dinners, so four trips back and forth a day, that could be responsible for the antisocialability.

Walking is a lesser evil than stigmatization.

So l ask, did you have to walk a long way to school when you were younger? Or did you get the bus or a lift from your parents?
About of quarter of a mile by myself from the age of five. There were no pavements and I often cut across a field and was chased by cows a few times!

My children had to walk themselves to school too, from about the same age, even though it was about a mile and the roads much busier.

Re: How Far Did You Walk To School As A Child?

My primary school was just a few hundred yards from home and there was even a grocery shop, en route, where I could buy a chocolate biscuit for breaktime.
My senior school was about 15 miles away, so I always traveled by bus, usually 2 buses, to there.
