Re: Flashing Rear Lights On Bikes

Those flashing lights as far as I am aware are not legal. There should be a steady red rear light and reflectors and a clear white steady light at the front

On the topic of peddle cycles I think everyone should have insurance whilst riding and pay a nominal road fund licence, but that is just my opinion

Re: Flashing Rear Lights On Bikes

In this town which has more bikes than humans (many people have two bikes) any kind of lighting would be a blessing.

Mind you a basic proficiency test wouldnt be a bad idea we regualrly see grups over overseas students on the wrong side of the road or on the ring road! But lights are a luxury item found few and far between police recently did a stop check at the railway crossing in and out of town and within an hour had more than 70 cyclists with incorrect or without any lights.

I am a cyclist and yes I have lights solid white in front solid red in back plus reflectors.

I'm a cyclist and have got insurance because I agree with that. In fact, it's not beyond possibility that a proportion of other cyclists are insured as well. I believe cycling clubs insist that their members get insurance (many Lycra-type cyclists look keen enough to be members of clubs). Although some cyclists may be insured, it's probably a fair assumption that the majority aren't.

As regards road fund license, the roads are paid for out of general taxation. Nothing to do with the Vehicle Excise Duty that we pay as motorists (I drive a car too). This is based on emissions and cyclists don't cause any air pollution. Since all adult cyclists are probably paying local and general taxes, they are indeed paying to use the roads.

My back light has the option to make it flash but I rarely set it to that. I've been riding a bike, at night when necessary, for 20 of my adult years. I have found that a constant rear and front light has been OK.

What about the white flashing epilepsy inducing lights at the front?

Re: Flashing Rear Lights On Bikes

A flashing red light is legal now as follows.

Rear Lamp

One is required, to show a red light, positioned centrally or offside, between 350mm and 1500mm from the ground, at or near the rear, aligned towards and visible from behind. If capable of emitting a steady light it must be marked as conforming to BS3648, or BS6102/3, or an equivalent EC standard.

If capable of emitting only a flashing light, it must emit at least 4 candela.

It also applies to front lights.
