But if this were the case, why on earth wouldn't the parent(s) have come forward before now?
This has had enough publicity for them to have seen/heard about it, so you'd have thought they'd have told the police it was them by now, wouldn't you

Looks like the whole thing may have been made up...

Police investigating the reported abduction of a child in Surrey have arrested a man on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

What an awful thing to do! If I was punishing him I would fine him sufficient to cover the cost of all the extra work, and if he didn't work or have any money I would put him on long term community service. He needs to realize just how much money he has wasted and that the police have better things to do!

Perverting the course of justice is a very serious offence carrying a long prison sentence, and it's very possible he will get away with it.
He should just have been charged with 'wasting police time' guaranteeing a sure and certain conviction, in the Magistrates court, and not incurring the horrendous costs of a lengthy trial in a criminal court.
The police are nuts !

Difficult to see how they can prove the story was made up unless the man confesses, and if that is the case then it's pretty obvious that he is not all there.

Have to agree with this.

All he has to do is stay silent or say he did see what he thought was an abduction.

Play the public spirited member of society.

A prosecution could have adverse effects on reporting genuine concerns.

On the other had though, if he gets away with it, there are plenty of other idiots that will get a kick out of wasting police time.

He's not getting away with anything.
He's not been charged as of yet.
For all we know he may well believe he saw an abduction.
He may not.

I'm not sure I'd like to see a public outcry over his actions, if it was a false report.

It's future abductees that may suffer.

IMHO.
