Cannon from HMS Victory

These are two Carronades like the ones on the Victory, they were made in Carron Iron Works in our town.

The foundry was incorporated by royal charter in 1759 and made all the guns for the army and navy of that time.

This was the gate to Grahamston Iron Works jut a mile up the road from Carron works, you can see the plaque with some info about the casting.

Falkirk was a major industrial area for hundreds of years but sadly it's all gone now, I worked in Carron works for two years and used to wander round the old blast furnaces where they smelted the iron, this was 35 years ago but now it's all gone.

Like shipbuilding on the Clyde, we've lost so many jobs and skills in Scotland it's a crime.

I can remember Cannons like that on Victory, when we were children we used to go to Portsmouth a lot, visited Victory often...Before the day you had to pay admission....

That really is a work of art. Fully agree the skills that have been lost in recent years may never be replaced.

We were talking about the traditional stone mason who could produce beautifully crafted pieces of architecture for some of the old buildings. We could never build them like that now, nor could we afford to.

Lovely photos and wonder what stories those canons and the gates could tell!
