Russia hit 1888 targets in one week, US 16

In the seven days before the announcement early Friday that a cease-fire might go into effect in Syria in another week, Russian forces hit more than 100 times as many targets within the embattled nation as a military coalition that includes the United States.

Exactly how the cease-fire proposed at an international conference in Munich would work is still being decided. The agreement announced by Russian and U.S. officials said “a nationwide cessation of hostilities . . . should apply to any party currently engaged in military or paramilitary hostilities” except the Islamic State, al Qaida’s Syrian affiliate – Jabhat al Nusra – “or other groups designated as terrorist organizations by the United Nations Security Council.”

This news item tells me that Obama is very conscious of collateral damage and that the Russians are not.

From the BBC

Pressure is increasing on Russia over civilian deaths in Syria, with France and the US urging greater caution.
French PM Manuel Valls and US Secretary of State John Kerry said civilians were dying in Russian air strikes.
Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev said there was "no evidence of our bombing civilians, even though everyone is accusing us of this".

Oh really?

One observers' group says at least 1,015 civilians have been killed in Russian air strikes.

Someone's lying and it's hard to tell who. I was all for Putin when he bombed the oil trucks and was glad he had joined in the struggle against ISIS, but I fear he's being pretty ruthless now.

How can you tell a good guy from a bad guy, as the bad guys don't wear a uniform?

Hi

According to the UN, there have been 250,000 thousand civilian casualties in Syria, many caused by groups supported and funded by the West, Saudi and Turkey.

I find it somewhat hypocritical for Russia to be singled out for criticism for causing less than 1% of this total, particularly when it is solely down to Russia that the Turkish Border has been largely closed, cutting off the supplies to Fundamentalist Muslim Groups who are committing massive atrocities on the civilian population.

Listening on the Today programme someone who had been in Syria recently said he had seen Russia/Iraq/Hezbollah/Syrian government forces /US special forces on the ground near Aleppo.

It was suggested that Putin is trying with the help of others to gain a little ground before the ceasefire.
Another speaker suggested that Putin really has no interest in whether or not Assad stays, his prime objective is to stop the spread of muslim fanatics and to see an 'acceptable' governance installed in Syria after the failure of the west to do likewise in Iraq and Libya. I think Putin will work with just about anyone who will help him achieve his aims.

Hi

The war in Syria will continue as long as Turkey continues supporting the Radicals.

As far back as 1993 there were over 30 known terrorists groups in Turkey, mostly associated with one politician or another.

Turkey will never give up these groups.
