The ministry's website recommends tourists visit a range of locations including Palmyra, a few miles from the frontline with IS, and Old Aleppo, which has been the scene of the heaviest fighting this summer and is roughly divided between rebel and regime forces.
Seems safe enough to me ... must just be a matter of been sensible then and of remembering to pack your SPF Factor 30 and an inflatable dinghy to soak up the cultural , scenic trip back home via Greece.
Aus has some (xenophobic ?) law that if you visit a place like this, you are 'suspect' on your return and will very likely have some long chats with our Intelligence people - and could end up in the calaboose.

Seems the Rebels(IRA type)have lost East Aleppo at last and with the help of the Russians... and with good will from the west the country can again become civilized(Not like S/A who behead a woman for going to a market to buy food without a male present))
