Those carpet snakes are (were?) common as household pets in Queensland because they keep down rodents and unlike cats don't leave fur everywhere.
My first contact with one was in the early 70s when I was staying at a GFs place in Innisfail in N Queensland her younger brother had one which tended to live up in the curtain pelmets. At first I found it rather unnerving sharing the house with quite a large snake but got used to it and even picked it up a few times to move it out of the way.
It really never needed feeding but the boy used to breed mice for it as a lazy treat. They are a python so they crush their prey and are very strong.
