Can a thread or post in an open public forum be considered Intellectual property, or do you lose right of ownership once unleashed via this medium.

I can answer this one

Your individual posts always belong to you. By posting on a website you grant the site the right to publish it (implied, even if not specifically covered by terms of use - which is the case on all the forums I admin).

Collectively, the thread belongs to the forum - so people cannot reproduce a forum's threads elsewhere.
