Here in Florida, in particular, norther Florida, we suffer a lot from sink holes. They are caused usually during a dry season. When water levels below ground decrease way too much. When this happens and the water level lowers, it causes dangerous underground cavities that eventually callapse bringing down whatever structure is above groundRe: Since 2010 sinkholes are on the increase - why?
A huge sink hole opened up here a couple of years ago which closed off the road for 12 months. It turned out to have been caused by a leaking watermai that had leached all the soil away over a long period of time. It was so close to a Pub that it had to close down and while the road was being repaired a mini housing estate was built where the pub once stood.
