I particularly remember the process of creating a commercial spot for the facelifted first version launched in 1996, the Mk II, which was to take the car originally positioned as the "world car" upmarket soon.
Moving from propositions like "The car you can push to the limit." (ever heard of any breakdowns?) over "The car that demands respect." i.e., having a presence on the road, to "The discerning choice." (car badges don't matter) and, finally, arriving at "It brings you to your senses." in the commercial.
These may not have been your reasons for buying the car but may, so at least the advertisers may have hoped, influenced you subliminally if you saw the commercial. Who knows.
