A bare-bones trade deal could be ratified by europarliament (not the commission). If it would be a comprehensive deal (e.g. including cooperation on security) all 27 national parliaments would have to agree.
So negotiations on these subjects will continue into 2021, outside the view of prying eyes.

It can't donks. So if a trade deal has to be concluded before 31 december, it has to be a bare bones one.
So either now a bare bones trade deal and the rest in 2021, or no deal now and a comprehensive deal later next year, in the midst of brexit chaos.
You left more than 9 months ago. It is the UK knocking on EU's door for a trade deal. If you don't like the conditions you could have walked ever since march when those conditions were put on the table by the EU.
