I need to think this out.
First, I shall try to forget that his name is Sutcliffe, and the terrible things he did.
He is a psychopathic killer, and that is a mental disorder. Probably incurable. That is why he shows no signs of remorse, and given the opportunity, he would probably carry on murdering.
Psychopaths are generally in the higher intelligence group, and therefore have greater persuasive abilities.
He needs to be kept locked up for the rest of his life, but within a compassionate environment. Short of giving him mind-numbing drugs to keep him in a constant stupor, he has to be accommodated in a mutually agreeable way.
One man. He has caused such anguish and trouble, and continues to do so. Think of the resources he is taking up, and how much care and attention will be needed for the rest of his life...
Perhaps it would have been more humane to have put him down?
