Thank you , Annie. Turns out that I was the one in the wrong.
It had never occurred to me that the word corn might be a generic term for any and all grains.
So, naturally when Columbus learned of maize, he just referred to it as corn, as he would for any grain.
Of course, in North America, the word corn refers specifically to that grain which grows on long , thick cobs ie: 'corn on the cob'. And, we in North America would never, ever, refer to wheat, rye, barley, dhurra as corn.
Never too old to learn something new.
