I find it really strange how some professions can hang on to their working titles and others can't.
To the best of my knowledge, if you have obtained an academic doctorate, yes, you retain that title until death (or even afterwards) unless for some reason it is rescinded.
If a medical 'doctor' (the Germans use the word Artzt to differentiate from the academic Doktor / Doktorin) you might be referred to as a retired doctor unless, for some reason, you have been barred from practising - like that one who used to kill all his patients!
For example, if you're on an aeroplane and someone shouts, "Is there a doctor on board", the assumption is that they want the help of a medical practitioner, and even a retired one would do!
Actually, it occurs to me that it would be quite funny if someone stood up and announced, "Yes, I have a PhD in gender studies".
