Looking at the photo I wouldn't think you need to replace the post Mups, a joiner could plant a new piece of wood on the post to realign it with the gate quite easily.

Ooh, that's a good idea Barry, I would never have thought of that.
The bottom half is fine, it's as I said, the top half just started to twist a long time ago, and it's got worse and worse.

when the Guy comes to do the post, get him to fit the gate vertically, noy horizontally.

I have contacted the carpenter, and he said he will pop round Saturday morning and have a look at the post.

I'll see what happens from there.
