I think people google for something and join because they want to reply to that old thread of interest that it seems they are digging up. They don't realise the date.

I think it's because they do a Google search on a particular subject and the thread shows in the results. If they then wish to add something or get further opinions, they have to join.

For some reason, whenever we search a subject, most of the results are old.
