It all depends on your definition of clever, I prefer the term gifted.

Gifted people can paint, write poetry, sing, write music, take amazing photographs.

They can play sports, design beautiful cars, the difference between a gifted teacher and an ordinary one is plain to see.

I am not clever, I am a scientist who can do a bit of Maths, no great shakes.

The thing about being a scientist is that you are constantly surrounded by people who are far cleverer than you are.

It is one thing to be able to follow the Maths in Hawkin's A Brief Illustrated History of Time, it is quite another to think them up in the first place.

The more I learn, the more stupid I realise that I am.

My brother is a Professor of English but he has no common sense whatsoever!
In fact at times he can be rather rude and socially inept

I think when one has reached the stage where one is having one's work on English literature published regularly because one is a leading lecturer in one's field, one could probably be described as being quite clever I would have thought
