Speaking to BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday, Jersey’s External Relations Minister, Ian Gorst, said that the island’s government had issued licences to French fishermen in accordance with the Brexit agreement. Jersey is a British Crown dependency but not part of the UK.
Gorst said that of the 41 French vessels who were issued licences last week, the majority had provided the historic fishing data that Jersey had requested.
However, 17 had not, “and that’s where the problem is”.
The minister added that Jersey has no wish to stand in the way of French fishermen’s historic rights to operate around it, as they have done for centuries, but stated that the island would continue to act in accordance with the Brexit deal, which he said wasn’t drawn up by them or France, but by the UK and EU.
Leaving Jersey and France the meat in the sandwich.
Yes, I read elsewhere that the real problem is that some of the Frog fishermen have failed to supply the required details. These are no doubt some of those who turn off their tracking devices and continue to fish illegally.
If the EU, and especially the Frogs, were willing to abide by the rules of the agreements both they and we have signed, they would support us in condemning the fishermen who are breaking the rules.
Of course they won't, as the illegal fishermen are their own foot soldiers.
Well, if nothing else what with the Frogs sending their own armed boat into the fray, this is becoming more and more interesting.
It's a toss-up now as to who will back down first.
The Frogs, because they're cowards, or Boris because he's really fighting on the side of the EU!
