Re: Calling Builders..or anyone who knows..

My parents' semi did not have the living room on a party wall.

The back room (which was smaller) was on the party wall.

(That's the only semi I have ever lived in, I've mostly lived in terraced houses or flats/bedsits.)

I didn't need a glass, they played Trivial Pursuit a lot and I used to shout out the answers!

Fire, that's your answer.
If the hall were in the centre then so would the stairs be. If there were a fire on the landing the fire would spread quicker to all other rooms(internal walls being of wooden stud construction)

Isn't that just modern houses though, being stud walls? With traditional houses, aren't internal walls usually brick - so perhaps less of a hazard ?

No, a lot of internal walls were lath and plaster over stud partitioning.
The only solid walls are usually those that are load bearing.

Now, if the stairs were in the middle you'd have very little natural light, just a tad from the front door, you couldn't put a window in the outer front elevation as this window would be unreachable therefore useless as a fire escape.

It's only a theory.
Oh how I wish I could accept that theory, it would shut me up.

But if it's a case of escape or access for fire purposes, there's the upstairs windows.
No different than the modern houses with stairs off or in the lounge.
If there was a fire down in the lounge and going up the stairs, presumably they'd have to use the upstairs windows for escape.

Same for a terrace. The stairs can be between the party wall and the lounge so no windows on either side of the stairs. Upstairs windows to escape.

I reckon I've just quashed your theory

Yes, the stairs in my parents' semi were dark. In my terraced house where I am now there's a window over the stairs (but too high for me to reach it and doesn't open so not an escape route).

Re: Calling Builders..or anyone who knows..

Sad that I am, I can't stop the cells ticking for a solution. There must be one!

Could it be down to posh or cheaper or council? Nope, they build them either way in both ends of the price bracket.

Does a particular builder have a penchant for lounge-lounge or hall-hall style. Nope.

Is it down to different areas of the country? Nope.

Could it be down to different eras then? Nope. In any era of house building, you find more lounges to lounges than halls to halls.

Anyone know an architect who knows?

Re: Calling Builders..or anyone who knows..

Where did you find the stats for that?

(If there were a fire on my stairs, and I happened to be upstairs at the time, I'd have to get out of an upstairs window. Probably applies to most of us. I imagine a few limbs would get broken.)
