Re: Useless Remedies.

When I was a wee girl - many moons ago - if I had a sore neck, or swollen glands, Mum would wrap one of her stockings (silk back then, not nylon) soaked in vinegar! That worked!! Her older sister used to put a stocking soaked in vinegar around her forehead when she had a headache - never cured her headache just gave her sore eyes!!

Bruce - your comment reminded me of when we were in France only a few years ago, small village in the south, and I had a terrible cough. Went to the local "pharmacie" and he made me up a mixture of his own, After a couple of tablespoons I started to feel better and after a day of taking it, even better. it was when i looked at the label closely I worked out why - it was 14% alcohol. Wish they made cough medicine like that here.

Yes Jan your OH is right, I too remember Cod Liver Oil and malt. Dragon (my Mother) used to line us all up and with a dessert spoon we'd al be fed it. George (my Dad - hence Dragon's nickname), my two Sisters and I and at the end of the line was our cat who also got to lick the spoon.

If we had muscle pains or strains we were given a poultice of 'Sloan's Linament' - it smelled disgusting and it burned.

Jean darlin' - we used to be able to get a very good cough medicine - Tincture of Morphine & Ipicacuana. Used to work wonders on coughs, but the Medical PC brigade managed to get it banned because some addicts used to drink it by the bottle and a few died.
