Living in the country Julie, I often hear loud bangs in the night, usually it is either he who must obey stubbing his toe en route to the bathroom and banging his fist against the wall in sheer pain.....or more likely to be those out shooting rabbits. The lights you saw could possibly have been the powerful torchlights they usually carry with them.

I just googled 'explosion Surrey' and it seems people are reporting they heard the same, on Facebook and Twitter.

I did a bit of Googling too and it seems it's not uncommon. What's baffling is that the light lasted for five minutes before disappearing which rules out a lot of suggestions.

I don't think they hunt rabbits here we are rather too townie to see anything like that.

Julie, Do You live near a railway line? I used to hear noises like that when they worked on the railway line in the night where l used to live.

We do hear noises and see flashes from the rails but this was closer to us than that, it seemed about couple of hundred yards away whereas rails are mile and a half away.
