Hi

It is a shame Nom, but many of the high rise had a short design life, built down to a price.

The old prefabs were much better built and lasted much longer.

The worst example of how bad it got was here.

They lasted less than 15 years and had to be demolished, unfit for human habitation.

Re: Blackpool Demolition Of Layton Flats 2016

I lived in one in the seventies, horrible places!
The trouble is, like Nom says, they probably won't be replaced by affordable homes or social housing.
There are still prefabs being lived in, in Bristol. Lovely little homes with tidy gardens, it's a pity we don't build those any more.
Of course the Bedroom Tax isn't helping, pensioners are exempt so won't swap with young families, children under ten (I believe) are not counted as needing a room so they can't upsize, it's all ass backwards and helping nobody.
Before anyone says "They shouldn't have kids if they can't afford them" many are working parents who can't get on the housing ladder and we actually need more kids than pensioners or we're all stuffed!

Its brilliant how they all toppled together, I was watching the one on the right, as I thought that one was going to go first.

Hope they put something better in its place.

Almost as bad as the Quarry Hill flats (Leeds) - a huge self contained community complete with shops that was launched with all due pomp as the housing for the future but became an absolute shithole. They became subject to poor maintenance and numerous social problems so were demolished in 1978.

Great stuff Omah. I wouldn't like to be the one clearing up the mess though.

Hi

Fond memories of Quarry Hill Flats, not.

The infamous Garchey System of waste disposal, spent many stinking hours there as a student unblocking it.

There was a sitcom about the flats, starring Diana Dors.

We have a number of high-rise towers here in Brighton. This is one of them!!!
