I agree Patsy, I saw it was all on the news and radio, and so many people respected the silence. I found it quite moving.

I was in the prison today and the prison officers and the prisoners did the 2 minutes silence, we had a discussion about remembrance and the significance of the dates, the men were very respectful

Re: Observing 2 minutes silence.

The vast majority of people where I was this morning certainly stood motionless as I've always found over the years. There will always be a few who cant or wont I suppose but it's always been that way. Mostly are drivers who for whatever reason keep driving possibly because it would cause a problem if they were to stop. Anyway an icy stare from me stopped two youngsters today. They froze on the spot.

Nothing moves. All tv and radio stations are silent busses pull over no train leaves a station and no flights leave Schipol.
All shops and bars are close at 8pm by law..
Everyone is indoors..

Watch the airport fall still at 8pm

Very impressive.

But why 8pm? What's the significance?
The armistice was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The Dutch were not involved in the first world war 1914-1918, they were neutral and they thought they could do the same again in 1939 so it was a bit of a shock when the neighbours came marching in withough even knocking and occupied their country.

May 5th marks the day they were liberated by allied forces from German occupation May 4th is the day they remember their dead.

Yes, of course. Thank you.
I can see, then, why not 11/11/11, but what is the significance of having their silence at 8pm?

I am silent for two minutes too. I also watch the Polish national remembrance ceremony via TVP Polonia, as our friends the Poles did so much for us (despite us letting them down during WW2.

Well I always observe it sadly the PPI companies don't because my mobile was going off throughout, gave them a flea in their ear when I finally answered.
