Re: Tell The Truth...Do You Dodge Charity Collectors In The Supermarkets?

Usually, I will side-step for those collectors outside of a supermarket.
I would stop for the Sally Army, boy scouts or girl guides.

Living in a small village, the one thing I absolutely detest are the envelopes pushed through my letter box saying somebody will come back for my contribution. A couple of years ago, the lady actually told me that I had given three pounds the previous year. How did she know unless she had marked my envelope, and checked it out when she had gone home? ....and then recorded it!

I never donate to a collector in a shopping mall.

Sometimes I do because I am tired and can't be bothered to rummage for change whist shoving a trolley
As I donate to charities I support by direct debit I don't feel that bad .
Other times I give something because I feel sorry for the collector .

I usually put any loose change from my shopping into the charity boxes that are found at the checkout tills in many shops and stores.

Usually I avoid them, but if it's an animal charity (especially dog-related) I will talk to them and find out something about them. There are a few dodgy ones around our area and I'm sure the money goes straight into the pocket of the collectors.

Although I used the word 'rattling', it seems they aren't allowed to rattle their tins anymore!!

Re: Tell The Truth...Do You Dodge Charity Collectors In The Supermarkets?

I nearly always give, especially in supermarkets as I assume the supermarket have checked the collectors credentials.
Don't give chuggers the time of day.
Last summer there were a group of questionable characters purporting to be collecting for the Army Benevolent Socity. no ID or documents. I didn't contribute.
Some weeks earlier a man was collecting for Help the Heroes on St. Annes beach.
I examined his card and said nothing doing.
I phoned Blackpool Police but they said they were busy.
They told me to phone Help the Heroes myself to see if they had a collector in the area.
It was a bank holiday and their phones were unmanned.
When I phoned them after they returned to work they told me that it was a bogus collector and that they were quite used to the Police's apathy in cases like this.

Re: Tell The Truth...Do You Dodge Charity Collectors In The Supermarkets?

I will give to any of the Services charities especially if it is an obvious veteran doing the collecting. All the others I look in the eye and give a firm "no thank you" to. A guy jumped right in front of me for some Dogs charity the other day in Morrison's and I was peeved with being accosted in this manner I said out loud " certainly not ,I prefer Cats. "

Re: Tell The Truth...Do You Dodge Charity Collectors In The Supermarkets?

I just ignore charity workers, chuggers and the even worse Big Issue sellers.
On the make chancers the lot of them.
Have you ever asked one of those so called charity workers how much commission they are on?
From what I know, it is between 10% and 20%.
The rest of the money goes to the well paid charity bosses and their swanky offices, and then about 20% to the actual charity cause itself.
Like I say.
I ignore 'em!

And please DON'T get me going about Big Stinking Lousy Issue sellers either!
