A good result. There are too many finding insult for the slightest thing that hurts their feelings. Free speech is also the right to offend someone even if message contains 'hurty' words. We should be on our guard against those who stifle honest opinion.

Re: Freedom of speech ruling

Overturning the decision, Mr Justice Warby explained that the relevant parts of the Communications Act 'were not intended by Parliament to criminalise forms of expression, the content of which is no worse than annoying or inconvenient in nature'. Mr Justice Warby also suggested that the prosecution had been an 'unjustified state interference with free speech'.

Police faced a backlash for phoning a 74-year-old woman to warn her that her online posts about gender identity had offended transgender people.

Former local journalist Margaret Nelson wrote in her blog that if a transgender person's body was dissected post-mortem, 'his or her sex would be obvious to a student or pathologist'.

But she was later contacted by Suffolk Police, who woke her with a morning phone call, telling her the comments had provoked complaints from members of the trans community.
Police time wasted on this.

About bluddy time too that the courts got involved like this but, mark my words, I'll bet the Supreme Court will come down on the over side.

Bound to be challenged but what should have been expected.
Push too far and people inevitably push back.
This has the potential to result in the mohammadans to go ape-excretia WHEN they find that it will allow people to appear (in their opinion) someone to insult their cult or its inventor in some way.

Meanwhile, the police who dealt with this will not have been able to use the time to actually catch crooks.

Exactly.

In this country we have always had the right of free speech, at least in modern times. Unfortunately, there have recently been more and more complaints from some people who are jumping on the bandwagon of the 'easily offended culture'.
Needless to say, there are the usual greedy lawyers ready to stand up for any such complaints as it must result in easy money for them.

Why has this begun to happen relatively recently?
Why are more people choosing to take offence on behalf of other people, especially those with whom they have no personal involvement?

What has changed over the past few decades to bring about these changes?

Re: Freedom of speech ruling

Thinking about it, I don’t believe I would make a stand at being verbally abused, it happens, let alone make a case about it, they need to learn to deal with it, why the need to involve others.

You can’t be wrapped in cotton wool, get out there deal with it by yourself as an adult.
