I used to feel like that when I first started using a sat nav. I had to stop myself apologising every time I ignored its directions. It was the same with cash machines; I always felt an impulse to say "thank you" when the money came out.

I never really contemplated it. I reason that there wouldn’t be a STOP option if it would damage the machine

Cancel ones selection is better than Stop, that suggests user error, cancel suggests a change of mind.
