Re: Here We Go Again...

I was thinking about it all today as I was going about the usual routines in my daily life.

All those people could be doing exactly the same but for the power of nature. To have it all snatched away in an instant must be totally devastating. Heartbreaking.

Re: Here We Go Again...

The damage is horrendous .
We have friends there they are ok but where they are living ( in our old houses ) is in the worst hit area .
There is no communication as yet .

Muddy, I can't imagine where one would even start with this debris.

That said, this week's issue of Time magazine reads, "The storms keep getting stronger. And so do we."

Perhaps resilence is one of the best and (sometimes) surprising of human qualities.

And sadly as always it's disabled and poor that take the brunt of the weather, anyone able and with enough money can get out of the way. It always annoys me when people call those stay behind are stupid or stubborn they are usually just unable to move.

Re: Here We Go Again...

There aren't many rich people on Dominica Julie .
It's not a place where rich celebrities go to live
It's one of the poorest of the Carribean islands.
And there is quite literally no where to get out of the way .
The island is mountainous with over 750 rivers that rage down the slopes
destroying all before it .
There is only a very narrow strip of flattish land next to the sea everyone lives on the mountain sides which are subject to catastrophic mud slides at the best of times .
The houses in the most expensive residential area were most severely hit the Prime Minister lost his roof too.
A force 5 hurracaine doesn't differentiate between rich or poor .
The Dominicans do their best to care for the poor and disabled
I don't think that anyone is calling anyone stupid or stubborn there is just no way that you can evacuate such large numbers of people .
I am pleased that Britain has contributed 5 million to the relief fund
