Valentine Endearments

All you need is love. but a little Chocolate now and then doesn't hurt

Charles M. Schulz.

Today is Valentine's Day,
-or as men will call it 'Extortion Day'

Jay Leno.

I'll love you dear, I'll love you
till China and Africa meet
and the river jumps over the mountain
and the salmon sings in the street.

W. H. Auden.

Re: Valentine Endearments

I bought my love a holiday, a sun-kissed island treat.
The tickets wrapped in silver foil, intriguing and discreet.
Because I loved him so, I added Calvin Klein
Cologne, two heart shaped chocs and then his favourite wine.

He gave me a tile cutter.

Valentine’s the following year I toned it down a gear,
I bought him leather gloves, a matching jacket, crate of beer.
Because I loved him so, I popped in DVDs
Of naked girls and football, both of which would please.

He gave me a set of spanners.

This year my man gave me a ring, a sparkle of devotion,
A wedding date, a home-made card just filled with his emotion.
I took back all my other things and told the jerk goodbye –
And now I’m cuddled up, content – of course, with tool shop guy!

My husband and I have not bothered with Valentine's Day since we were teenagers, just not us.

Hmmm, I'd rather have the tile cutter and the spanners

Re: Valentine Endearments

Always slight dread at idea of Valentine's Day, we set out well enough but something always goes wrong out of our control. One year car caught fire on our way to an evening out, another my husband broke his leg, I broke my wrist on another occasion. Always now just try to ignore it, it's just too dangerous to celebrate.

Besides romance is not something you can make happen it should be spontaneous.

Tony & I are the same - so are our friends. I don't know a single couple our age who 'Do' Valentines day.

I think it's for young lovers.

Well really I suppose it was meant to be anonymus wasn't it?
So in a way I guess couples who have been together for years are defeating the meaning of it, do you think, no matter how nice the intentions.

Wasn't it to do with the Romans drawing ladies names out of a box on feast day? It was considered a day of romance I believe.
Not sure what happened to the ladies they chose?

That's true Mups. It was always about letting someone you know you loved them (or fancied the pants off them) anonymously. We still give cards out of tradition though.

Re: Valentine Endearments

Ah yes, Valentine's Day when you can pay three or four times as much for a meal in a restaurant than you pay for the same meal any other day. The cost of flowers also rockets up for the day. Valentine's day will come and go just like most other days for us.

Yes, it is tradition, and a nice harmless one for a change too.
At least someone knows they're thought of.
