A date to remember 25th September 1916
On this date in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire the practice of buying a round of beer
was outlawed.
Why, well because it was called Lloyd George's Beer or
When it was Illegal to buy your round.
They said that too many people were getting drunk and
rowdy and it could have been caused by others buying
the drinks. The beer at that time was being watered down
to about 3% from about 8%, the prices went up and
the opening times of pubs were cut down.
When the coal miners came off their shift at 8pm it left
them only until 9pm to drink. This short time of course then
made them drunker having to drink about 5 pints in an
hour instead of a more hours.
I can just imagine that nowadays
A story I liked was a lad called Samuel went into a pub
in Nottingham and said let me buy everyone a drink as
I am getting married. So he was served with 12 drinks
for the people there. A policeman who was going from
pub to pub to keep his eye on things saw this event
happen and arrested Samuel and the Landlady.
He was given a fine and when the Judge found out he
wasn't getting married the next day doubled the amount
Then in 1917 Samuel did get married to the Landlady.
Great little story I heard today on the radio and decided
to have a look at Lloyd George's Beer worth a look.
