Mummy and Daddy

I just heard an older lady refer to her late mother as Mummy. It might be just me but it makes me cringe. I always refer to my late parents as my Mum and Dad. My husband always refers to his late parents as The Old Man and The Old Lady. He has always done this ever since I met him so it doesn't bother me. But Mummy and Daddy from an OAP, just not right to my ears. How about you?

Re: Mummy and Daddy

Mum and dad definitely but I can't say mummy and daddy bother me too much. I know people these days have more than one mum or dad and they make the distinction by calling one mum and the other mummy. I predict we will hear more and more of it as time goes by.

Re: Mummy and Daddy

I do agree with you, Leia, it makes me cringe too.

I have notice many 'posh' people refer to their parents as Mummy & Daddy too, and I have never liked it.

It doesn't seem right to me for any adult to still be saying Mummy, to me it is like still using baby talk.

I'd think my son was having me on if he called me Mummy now!

Re: Mummy and Daddy

Mum and Dad, but our daughter (ages 34) calls me Mummy - don't know why, she just does! And I really couldn't care less, she says "I love you Mummy" a lot, and that's the most important thing.

Re: Mummy and Daddy

What I really don't like to hear is when the 'kids' are talking about their parents to someone else and say something like - " I'll ask Mummy", or "Shall we ask Mummy to dinner" etc.
